The Future of Automation: Exciting Changes on the Horizon

This post was last updated more than 1 year ago. Some content may be out of date.

In today's fast-paced world, businesses are constantly seeking ways to streamline processes, enhance productivity, and reduce human errors. It is vitally important to follow the recent changes to keep up with them.

Atlassian has recently announced two important changes regarding automatics. We have collected them and highlighted the most important parts in order not to be left behind and start preparing in time.

We would like to draw your attention to the upcoming changes:

  1. Changes in automation packaging modell
  2. Rule Builder for Automation

Let’s start with the changes of the limitation:

Automations are a really important tool for most of the teams that use Jira to increase productivity and save time. From 2020 automation is integrated as a core component of Jira Software, Jira Service Management, Confluence, Jira Work Management and Jira Product Discovery. If you are a Jira administrator you are perfectly aware about the limitations concerning your projects.

On November 1, 2023 Atlassian launched a new Automation packaging model for all Jira Cloud products (Jira Software, Jira Service Management, Jira Work Management, and Jira Product Discovery).

In the current model, customers get a single, pooled limit across all Jira products. In the new model, each Jira Cloud product will have its own usage limit.

For the new and current limitation check this chart below. As you can see for Jira Software, changes only affects the standard and premium editions:

What about the other Jira products that use automations?

Increased Customization:  Automation is most effective when it can be tailored to the unique needs of each team and project. The changes in cloud automation packaging are expected to provide more customization options, allowing customers to create automation rules that truly fit their workflows and business processes.

If your team is affected with this changes you need to know the following:
For annual licenses, it starts with the new round, for monthly licenses it is expected that the new limit will be enforced after a grace period of 2-3 months.

New look for the Rule Builder for Automation

Atlassian began the rollout of the Rule Builder update in mid-October. The new look is planned to be available across all products by the end of this calendar year.

We have summarized the main changes:

  • More space for your rule - Enhanced User Experience
The new look for the Rule Builder promises a more user-friendly and intuitive interface. This means that customers, whether they are seasoned Atlassian users or newcomers, will be able to set up automation rules with ease. This enhanced user experience reduces the learning curve and empowers teams to get more out of the Atlassian suite.
  • Improved Efficiency: Atlassian's commitment to automation is not just about making things look better; it's about making processes more efficient. These changes are geared towards streamlining repetitive tasks and reducing manual effort. This means customers can expect to see improved efficiency and ultimately cost savings.
  • Less scrolling and better branching
Component details have now moved into the right side bar, and it’s now always visible. They have also made a branching refresh, to make it clear where an if/else or branch occurs in your rule flow.
  • Everything you need, in one place
You will never forget to save a rule and lose your changes! From now on you will find the Turn on rule and Update buttons on the top right of the new rule builder. You’ll also find the Audit Log, Rule Details, and options to toggle rules on or off in the same place.

Sounds great? Let’s go and create your first automation rule now!
